There’s no doubt about it: working out at home with your own home gym equipment provides a lot of advantages. There’s no need to factor in travel time to and from the gym, you never have to bring a bag, and you can listen to your favorite exercise music without wearing headphones. For many people, home is also a stress-free environment in which one can exercise.
There is a lot you can do with a few low-cost items of home gym equipment. However, having some extra equipment available provides you additional training alternatives, allowing you to add resistance as you become stronger, and provides your exercises more diversity, so you (and your muscles) don’t grow bored with the same old, same old routine. Here are five pieces of equipment which are essential to build your own gym at home.
1. Exercise Mat

At the most basic level, an exercise or yoga mat makes floor activities far more pleasant, whether you’re doing back abs or knee push-ups. If you’re working out on a hard surface, go for a thicker mat with additional padding. Furthermore, utilising a mat is a terrific method to ensure that you have at least one rectangle of workout-designated space. You may even take your workout outside by bringing your mat to the garden or the beach.
2. Resistance Bands
Resistance bands, in particular, are an excellent method to add a level of difficulty to lower-body exercises. The tighter the band, the more difficult it is to work with.
3. Kettlebell
Kettlebells are a more flexible piece of equipment than you may imagine, and they’re excellent for exercising your muscles and increasing your heart rate. You can practise standard kettlebell exercises like kettlebell swings or Turkish get-ups, as well as incorporate them into standard weight training programmes to mix things up.For example, you can execute a kettlebell goblet squat or a walking lunge, passing the kettlebell below your front leg with each step forward.
4. Dumbbells

When it comes to at-home training, a set of dumbbells provides up a world of possibilities: Use them for individual strength workouts like bicep curls, to increase resistance during complex workouts like lunges, and more. Don’t know what weight to get? Choose a medium set first. While various weights are appropriate for various people depending on their fitness level, 8- to 10-pound dumbbells are a decent place to start.
And, while lesser weights are useful for workouts that target smaller muscle groups (such as triceps extensions), you may be creative without them if you’re on a tight budget.
5. Jump Rope
There are several methods to include equipment-free cardio into your daily routine at home. A jump rope, on the other hand, is a great retro approach to get your heart rate up—and up quick. Jumping rope also strengthens your arms, shoulders, core, and legs. Try this 10-minute jump rope exercise.
Add on: Mirror
A full-length mirror isn’t exactly essential home gym equipment, but it may help you keep track of your form. It is critical to monitor your technique throughout your workout in order to avoid injuries and gain strength appropriately. So, if you have the space and the money, it’s one of the best home gym add-ons.
