How to Keep Your Laptop from Overheating

2 Mins read

Laptops are great because they allow you to work from anywhere, but if your laptop overheats then it can be a real problem. There are many things that cause laptops to overheat, and today we’re going to discuss some of the most common causes as well as ways that you can prevent your laptop from overheating.

Why Is Your Laptop Overheating?

Because of a lack of cooling, your laptop is overheating.

A blocked fan, clogged air intake or exhaust grills, a clogged-up motor, or thermal paste deterioration are reasons why your computer’s fans may not be working. Thermal paste (sometimes known as a pad) is a heat-conducting substance that connects the CPU or GPU to the metal heat sink and directs heat away from the processing units, usually through a cooling fan.

Tips To Keep Your Laptop from Overheating

There are a few things you can do to help stop your laptop from overheating. :

– Fix Internal Cooling.

If your laptop has a fan inside, make sure it’s clean and not blocked by dust or other debris. You can also try using a compressed air duster to clean out the vents.

– Make sure your laptop has enough ventilation.

If it doesn’t, the heat will build up and cause your computer to overheat.  Try not to put your laptop on soft surfaces like a pillow or blanket, as this will also trap the heat.

A good way to ensure that your laptop has enough ventilation is to keep it on a hard surface like a desk or table. You can also use a cooling pad if you’re worried about it overheating.

– Close any programs or windows that aren’t necessary.

When there are too many programs running at once, it can create more heat for your computer to have to deal with, which can cause it to overheat.

Close any programs that aren’t in use and leave only the ones you need open for your work or play so they won’t contribute to heating up your laptop.

– Don’t put off going into ‘hibernate’ mode when exiting a program.

While many people know about sleep mode vs hibernation, not everyone is aware of how easy it is to enter this state on their computer if needed.

Entering hibernate mode will help save power while cooling down the CPU more quickly than normal standby modes would be able to since all of the components are powered down instead of just sleeping (or idling). If you’re done using your computer for a while, be sure to go into hibernate mode.

– Don’t use your laptop on a soft surface like a pillow or blanket.

This will trap the heat and cause it to overheat more quickly than if you were using it on a hard surface such as a desk or table.

Try not to put your computer down for extended periods of time so that there is still ventilation going through its parts – don’t let it get too hot! Also, try not to sleep with your laptop next to you in bed. Even though many people do this regularly without an incident, some laptops have been known to burn those who rest them on their legs while sleeping! It’s best just to keep all electronic devices away from where you’re trying to sleep.

– Use an External Cooling Pad.

If all else fails, you can try using an external cooling pad to help cool down your laptop. These are relatively cheap and can be found at most computer stores.

An external cooling pad will help to circulate the air around your laptop, which will help dissipate the heat more evenly. This is a great option if your laptop tends to overheat often or when you’re working on something that requires a lot of processing power.

Hopefully, these tips will help keep your laptop from overheating and ruining your day!
