Many modern businesses rely on virtualization to effectively assist them in storage, network, and computing. Virtualization helps such businesses in cutting hardware costs and also scale more efficiently. Today, VMware vSphere happens to be the most advanced server visualization management product available on the market.
And one of the core functions offered by VMware vSphere is data protection through vSphere backup and recovery. So, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do file-level backup and restoration of VMs in VMware.
Before starting a backup process, you have to set up and configure a backup server that the appliance has access to. There are multiple protocols supported for Center backup, including HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, FTPS, SCP, NFS, and SMB. You can use any of these protocols for your backup.
- Log into the Appliance Mode – Open your web browser and type in your vCenter Server 7.0 FQDN or IP address using port 5480. Then type in your center username and password to log in.
- Click on Schedule Backup – On your VCenter Server Management page, click on the backup tab to open up the backup page. Then click on “Configure” in the Backup Schedule section.
- Create Backup Schedule – Once you have gotten to the Backup Schedule page, the next step you need to take is to create your backup schedule configuration. Here you will input all the necessary details and check all the required boxes. These details include the backup location, backup credentials, the schedule for routine backups, and the number of backups to retain. You can choose to encrypt your backup to provide an extra layer of security to it. Furthermore, you can choose to configure or disable various options like DB health check and the stats, events, and tasks backup if as you deem fit. After you finish configuring your backup schedule, you can click “Create” to save the configurations.
- Click Backup Now – After saving your preferred backup configuration schedule, the next step to take is the actual backup. You do this by clicking the Backup Now button under the Activity section on the Backup page and initiate the backup process.
- Verify your Backup Folder – Once you click Start, the backup process will start, and you will be able to see the process in the Activity section. Based on how big the backup file size is, the process may take a while before it finishes backing up successfully. After the backup succeeds, you can verify the backup folder in your Backup server.
Your vCSA can encounter unforeseen problems, and the only solution you can provide is to restore a previous backup. You should note that for a successful recovery of vCSA, the VMware backup and the restore utility must have the same version. Having mismatched versions on both ends will get you an error message. So, every time you upgrade your vCSA, you should immediately make a backup.
- Open VMware vCSA ISO file on your system. Then from the menu, click the restore icon.
- Click deploy vCenter Server to redeploy a clean vSCA.
- Enter your backup details that include your backup location, username, and password.
- Specify the vCSA deployment target.
- Set up target vCenter Server VM by entering a name for this VM.
- Set up the deployment size. You can use the default setting for this or use your preferred option.
- Select datastore.
- Configure network settings – Here, you will enter the settings that reflect your environment.
- Restore – Once you are done with the whole process, the built-in wizard will initialize the restoration and deploy a clean VCSA using the specified details.
Once the vCenter server has been restored, you will find your server the same as when the backup took place.
Asides from the file-level backup process, there is also the image-level backup process that can be used to backup and restore VMs in VMware Vsphere 7.0. However, the image-level backup process uses third-party backup software like Naviko for VMware vSphere backup and restoration.
